Who Was Nikola Tesla?

As A Child
Nicola Tesla was born in Croatia at midnight of July 10th, 1856. As if his life reflected this moment in time, it is said that he was born during an electrical storm. His father was a Serbian orthodox priest. His mother was also the daughter of a Serbian orthodox priest and had 3 girls and 2 boys. Nikola's brother was older than he and died in a horse riding accident when he was only 5 years old.

Nikola's health was a concern, not only in his youth, but also as an adult. Although he is said to have had a photographic memory, having finished 4 years of school in 3, he was greatly afflicted by neurological illnesses and at 19, had a nervous breakdown. His mind was quick with detailed times of inspiration. In the same vein, he would receive blinding flashes of light across his eyes, which were often joined by visions. What psychiatrists would have called hallucinations at the time, he would not have been accepted for this rare condition. For what may have seemed to Nikola as a great burden, would have been to the rest of the world, a great gift.

Into Adulthood
At age 19, it did not take long for Nikola to enter into the world of electrical engineering. While in school, he studied the uses of alternating current. Though the rest of his life would be filled with chaotic twists and turns, it would forever revolve around the mechanics of electricity. After dropping out of school, he broke ties with his family and friends and began employment as an assistant engineer in Maribor, Slovenia. During that time, he suffered from a nervous breakdown. His father, after entering his life, convinced him to once again attend school and he did this, until his father died. Then, after only one term, he left.

How Did He Do It?
Tesla would visualize the end product of an invention before even taking a step into production. By the time he put it to paper, in his mind, his invention was already built. Having a picture perfect memory, Tesla often had flashbacks, which no doubt assisted in his planning.
